The most iconic Oxford colleges

The Oxford Collegiate system is a distinctive feature of the University of Oxford, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. This system is renowned for its unique structure, which combines the academic resources of a large university with the intimate, personalised environment of residential colleges. At its core, the Oxford Collegiate system consists of around 36 autonomous colleges, each with its own history, traditions, and facilities. These colleges vary in size, ranging from large colleges with hundreds of students to smaller, more intimate ones. Each college has its own governing body, which is responsible for its administration, finances and welfare of students.

Applicants for Oxford typically apply to a specific college rather than to the university as a whole. Once accepted, they become members of both the college and the university, gaining access to the resources and opportunities offered by both entities. So there is usually a lot of decision making when it comes to choosing colleges. Here we list (what we believe are) the 3 most iconic colleges of Oxford for those who are interested in learning more about their story.

1 - Christ Church College

3 - Merton College
